What is SMT PCB assembly?
SMT PCB assembly is the process of mounting electronic components directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board. Compared with traditional through-hole assembly, SMT supports smaller components, higher component density and automated high-speed production.
What files are required for an SMT PCB assembly quotation?
A typical quotation package should include Gerber or ODB++ files, a bill of materials (BOM), pick-and-place files, assembly drawings and order quantities. Programming instructions, testing requirements and special process notes should also be provided when applicable.
What types of SMT components can be assembled?
SMT assembly can support common packages such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, SOICs, QFNs, QFPs, BGAs and fine-pitch integrated circuits. Actual capability depends on component size, lead pitch, board design and inspection requirements.
What is the difference between SMT and through-hole assembly?
SMT components are mounted directly onto PCB surfaces, while through-hole components have leads inserted through drilled holes. SMT is suited to compact, high-density electronics, whereas through-hole technology is often used for connectors, transformers and components requiring greater mechanical strength.
Can SMT and through-hole components be assembled on the same PCB?
Yes. This is called mixed-technology PCB assembly. The board normally undergoes SMT placement and reflow soldering first, followed by through-hole insertion and wave, selective or manual soldering.

Yes. Turnkey SMT PCB assembly can include PCB fabrication, component sourcing, BOM verification, SMT production, inspection, testing and final packaging. Consigned and hybrid sourcing models may also be used when customers supply selected components.

Lead time depends on PCB complexity, component availability, order quantity, testing requirements and special processes. Projects using readily available components can move faster, while allocated parts, custom fixtures or complex testing may extend the schedule.
